The traffic map for the valley. The first snowstorm of the year is always miserable, as people seem to forget this is Utah and it snows and they've have to drive differently.

Yep. Live at the north end of the valley, wife works at the south end. I'll be leaving to pick her up in an hour or so. Almost got hit 3 times and saw two people crash off the road in 20 minutes of driving around noon today. Not fun.

Lived in SLC for 7 years and I don't miss those days at all. Now I live Seattle where people forget how to drive in the rain...

I live in utah county. I was driving a normal cautious very slow corner and got stuck. Luckily people are merciful and a guy helped push me out. On the hill up to my house my car refused to grip and I hopped out and hiked home. Luckily when I came back another mercifiul soul was towing someone else who suffered the same plight and he must have heard the desperation in my voice because he pulled me out as well.

I dont think the problem is my driving or my tires I think the snow plows do a terrible job.

I HATE SNOW and I HATE UTAH right now.

oh come now, sounds like you just need better tires, a good "stranded" kit and some rest. Snow is wonderful! Utah is wonderful!! granted it took me 1:45 to get home, and it killed me to say I didn't stop and help people stuck in the snow because anything useful for recovery was in my recovery box which i took out to haul stuff. I felt like a jerk seeing people stuck on a hill and not being able to help.

I have really fresh all season tires. I am thinking of getting some winter tires and chains maybe studded tires as well maybe convert the mustang to AWD.

What is this stranded kit?

Skip the studs. They are good if you are driving on ice a lot, but on loose snow they are useless and on dry roads they hurt traction. New snow tires are impressive even without studs.

Ah, mustang. Yeah, thats always going to be tricky. You will NEED winter tires to really get around in a storm like we just had. My stranded kit includes the following:

Warm blankets and jackets

food

water

shovel

tow strap

tools

something to keep me occupied (card games, etc)...this is more important than it sounds

And for you I would add a traction aid like sand or kitty litter.

hmm you sound like a wise man who knows the ways of the snow. Do you think it is even worth it for me to buy winter tires? Should I buy two for the rear only? I have some spare 14" wheels that can become winter beater wheels.

100% winter tires. All 4 corners. Skinniest tires you can
